As the raucous noise of helicopters and VIP limousines echoing around Davos during the World Economic Forum is replaced by the peaceful swishing sound of skis and skates, we are reminded that this year’s theme, “Collaboration for the Intelligent Age”, was actually a backdrop to one of the WEF’s main attractions – as a networking event par excellence.

There is a saying in business that “contacts mean contracts”, but networking is more than just exchanging contact details (either electronically or with “old-fashioned” business cards ...), it is in fact about “collaboration” in the sense of gaining access to potential partnerships, increased knowledge of industry trends and commercial opportunities, and valuable development measures both professional and personal.

Being an accomplished networker, then, pays off – but it requires a degree of skill and mindset approach which does not come naturally to everyone. It also needs planning, determination and persistence to achieve results. Here are some of the main principles for becoming a super-networker:

  • Being good at connecting is about sincerity and passion; you have to get a buzz out of making someone interested to talk to you

  • Be prepared: before attending an event / gathering, try to get the list of attendees. Search social media sites to identify topics they might be interested in, think of insightful questions to ask, identify elements you have in common (hobbies, sports, charities etc)

  • Be interested in them and show it. Asking their “story” not only builds rapport but can give valuable insights into their character, what they are working on in business and potential ways you can help in areas where they may be struggling

  • Be memorable: mention something personal/professional which defines the benefits people could get from interacting with you; introduce someone in your network who can be of help to them (thereby giving the hint that they should reciprocate in kind ...).
